The speech Oprah Winfrey gives for her award is an empowering speech to
women and African Americans. She speaks about the experience she saw
with her mother, to the experiences, African American women had in the past. Her speech gives those who have suffered abuse; strength and lets them know they are not alone.
The abuse is only a start to what I see from the speech given by Oprah
Winfrey at the Golden Globe Awards. It is directed not only to the actors and actresses present at the event but also to African Americans, specifically, those who have suffered abuse of any kind. In her speech, Oprah tries to convey a message of strength and gratitude towards every single citizen that has helped this woman be successful in her journey, and she also describes how African American women have been treated throughout the history of the United States of America.
Yet, I also see her speech demonstrating value & remains remarkable to this day. Besides, her popularity as an actress and show host, she is an icon for African Americans. Becoming a legacy is pure dedication. As such, she represents the ideals of several generations of African Americans who suffered from injustice and punishment. The words of her discourse resemble the desire of several women claiming freedom and equality. Given that these values are contained in such a masterpiece of a discourse, her speech is remembered today as a symbol of prowess.
Oprah’s speech is delivered with a courageous tone, which instills in her audience a sense of responsibility. The style of the discourse, being one of encouragement and strength, allows the audience to understand the struggles of several generations of men and women, which have led to the advancement of American culture, as well as a remarkable legacy. Overall, in the delivery of her speech, Oprah emphasizes the importance of strengthening our community.
Reception in 2018
When the speech was given in 2018, it went well with her audience. Her peers clapped, cheered and gave standing ovations to Oprah Winfrey. It inspired hope to the audience, and as Giovanni Russonello of the New York Times stated, “Oprah Winfrey accepted the Golden Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement with a rousing acceptance speech that began as a personal reflection and ended as a call to arms.” To those who are for the equality of women’s rights, this speech gave them strength.
Reception in 2020
Although Oprah Winfrey’s speech is one to be remembered, it is not talked about often. If her speech were given today, it would have the same reception it did two years ago, since, sadly, a lot of the topics she brought up have not changed drastically. The reception would still inspire those around her and give them strength.
In conclusion, this speech is a motivational speech, towards an audience who is filled with viewers who look upon Oprah as a sensation and a role model. Addressing her audience on women in particular ” I want to say that I value the press more than ever before as we try to navigate these complicated times, which brings me to this: What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories.” Touching on this topic bring emotion to the women’s eyes in how the sufferage of abuse they might have encountered, there is light in the tunnel to have that remarkable legacy to look back on.
