The news is filled with the coronavirus pandemic and its effects. However, as there are many different articles about it, they all have different purposes. This is because they are different genres and use different forms of rhetoric. Today, we are going to talk about this coronavirus article from the CDC for this assignment.
The article “Severe Outcomes Among Patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)” was produced by the CDC, which is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They are an extremely trusted company and source of information for diseases. The purpose of the CDC is to protect the health of citizens. Therefore, it is safe to assume that the purpose of this article is to inform people more about coronavirus and give them steps to stay safe.
Besides, they specifically have a section that tells people how to take caution:
“COVID-19 can result in severe disease, including hospitalization, admission to an intensive care unit, and death, especially among older adults. Everyone can take actions, such as social distancing, to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect older adults from severe illness.”CDC
Why is the CDC qualified to post this?
Again, the CDC is the Centers for Disease Control. Talking about diseases is their specialty. They can be trusted since they are the official company of disease prevention. This gives the article some ethos since it is a trusted, credible source coming from credible people.
Plus, they also have some logos, using statistics from the virus. If they were not the CDC, these statistics could be unreliable. But it comes directly from them.
The CDC’s Medium
This article almost uses pure text, but there are some statistical graphs at the bottom, which are considered images. They use this not only to get the information out but so people can visually see the statistics. The higher bars might scare people into listening to the CDC and stay home. This is a use of pathos, manipulating people’s emotions with fear.
